Sustainable Housing

Sustainability is now a much used word. The challenge for us all is to put the words into practice! Brendan and Vanessa believe it is vital the building industry and home buyer all consider how we can build and live in our homes in ways to improve our own wellbeing and that of our environment. They have found during their on and off site research that sustainability encompasses much more than energy efficiency. Key issues to consider are:

Passive Solar Design

Energy Efficiency

Water Conservation

Material Selection

Site Management

Reduce, Re-use Recycle

Landscaping

Active Energy Systems

Energy Efficiency

As well as choosing appliances with the best energy rating you can afford, give consideration to their estimated life span. It is a sad fact that many appliances are now only lasting for five to seven years. Try to find out which manufacturers are bucking the trend and making appliances that outlast their competitors -repairers may have some useful information.  Of course the upfront costs are higher but an appliance that breaks down more quickly and has to be replaced more often - ending up in landfill- is not as ‘cheap’ in the long run.
Correctly installed insulation in the ceiling, walls and under timber floors is a cost effective method of reducing heat transfer and thus decreasing the use of energy draining heating and cooling. Another cost efficient way of reducing energy bills is to make sure door and window seals are tight and that vents can be closed when necessary. If the budget allows for it, consider the use of double glazing for some or all windows. Use tightly fitting blinds or curtains to insulate windows where possible.
